My husband and I have thrown many many kids birthday parties at our home. It has been important for us for two big reasons– first, it has made financial sense, and, second, there is an element of grounding and keeping a party in our hands and on our schedule when we have it in our yard or at the neighborhood school yard. We have learned that having lots of boys over means having a plan that includes a simple cooperative game with a ball or water balloons and generous amounts of snacks. Not always the popular option in the beginning, home based parties have a quality of their own. At the end of the day, they are appreciated because in many cases the unstructured play time has its own beautiful creative energy and is very freeing. It is more work in some respect, but it is also provides a unique experience that allows them to be outside in all weather and create their own fun. We have always insisted on inclusivity and manners. We have always looked to have unique and meaningful events. I am glad we did!
